This interview is from JaME world. All credits go to them! The Candy Spooky Theater interview in the Netherlands INTERVIEW - 16.05.2008 Author : Nathalie & Tessa ; translation : Nathalie JaME held an interview with the horror band The Candy Spooky Theater during their first Europe tour Last year they toured the US and this year The Candy Spooky Theater came to Europe for the first time. In the Netherlands they performed during the “horror" event The Spooky Fest. After the concert the three members made some time to answer our questions. You’ve performed several concerts in Europe now. What were the reactions of the European fans? Jack: Of course in Europe there were different reactions on different locations. But all reactions excited us. You have now seen Europe and America, has your opinion about those countries changed? Jack: We were in America and Europe to perform. We didn’t know how the fans would react and whether they would like us or not, we didn’t know yet how it is in those countries. Now we’ve seen those reactions, which were amazing, we’re happy. When you created The Candy Spooky Theater did you already have plans, or dreams, to go to the rest of the world? Jack: Hm... when we created the band we didn’t have plans to go to Europe or America. Where do you find your inspiration for your look, and do you change that often? Jack: Personally, my inspiration comes from bands I like, and the most influence comes from horror movies. The “basis look” doesn’t change often. How did you get to the name for The Candy Spooky Theater? Jack: Our image is about Halloween and horror, we’re a horror band and that’s important for us. Our name came from that image. In an earlier interview you told you’re inspiration comes from horror movies. What are your favourite horror movies and stories? Jack: My favourite horror movies are the Dracula movies from Bela Lugosi, which were published in 1932. Peggy: Zombie movies. Kiddy Skeleton: "Sleepy Hollow". You published one CD in Europe, how did you select the songs which are on that album? Jack: Before we published the CD in Europe we published several things in Japan. The European release is sort off a ‘best of’, so we looked at what European people would like and choose those. Kiddy Skeleton recently joined the band. Will your sound change with the new line-up? Jack: I’m sure our sound won’t change. How did you choose him as the new guitarist? Auditions, or did you already know him? Jack: We knew him already from his activity in other bands. Peggy played bass in a band Kiddy played in too and I came to a concert to watch. I thought he was an amazing guitarist and really wanted him as member of the band. Jack and Peggy, in 2004 you played together with Motoki (2nd Effect) and Tak (Calmando Qual) in the session band Kurogumi. How did you get to the idea to form a band together? Jack: We already knew each other from 2nd Effect, Peggy also plays there as bassist. We already played with them twice... once? Or twice? (looks at Peggy) Peggy: Twice Jack: We wanted to do something nice together and that’s why we formed Kurogumi. Peggy, so you also play in 2nd Effect. Could you tell us more about that band? What kind of music do you play, and is it difficult to combine with The Candy Spooky Theater? Peggy: It isn’t difficult. The kind of music is "neo subculture". Kiddy and Jack, do you also play in other bands as session musician? Jack: No, only in The Candy Spooky Theater. Kiddy: At the moment? Now I only play in The Candy Spooky Theater. Jack, at your blog we could see you designed the T-shirts, which are sold during this tour, yourself. Did you have a special theme or concept in mind for these T-shirts? Jack: For the T-shirts I also used the horror and Halloween theme, the same theme as the band has. An amazing combination of pop and horror. I wanted to make the horror theme “cute”. How do you see yourself as band in ten years? Jack: We can not look ten years further into the future, so we don’t know. Maybe a World tour… that would be beautiful. What are you going to do when you’re back in Japan, can we expect a new release soon? Jack: Of course we’ll work on new songs and a new album. When I’m back in Japan I want to eat Japanese. Ramen! (everyone laughs) Could you say something about the person sitting on your left side? Peggy about Jack: Nijineko. Jack about Kiddy Skeleton: (thinks for a moment) Nijineko. Kiddy Skeleton about Peggy: (stares and points at the wall where he sits next to, there is no one sitting on his left side. Then he says about Peggy:) Hentai (everyone laughs). Do you have a message for the readers of JaME? The Candy Spooky Theater: This was our First Europe tour. If it’s possible we want to get back to Europe soon. We will make new songs and hope everyone enjoys it. JaME says thank you to The Candy Spooky Theater, their management, JRock NL and Astan for this interview This interview is originally in Dutch, translated to English by Darcy Maris |
